The cruelty of sport

3 sports in the last few weeks have demonstrated how cruel sport can seem. Geirant Thomas loses the 3 week Giro D'Italia bike race on the penultimate day by 14 seconds. A competitor in Ironman Hamberg gets hit by a motorbike on the big leg killing the motorbike rider and leaving the competitor in a serious state.

The CrossFit semi finals come to a close and hearts are broken as athletes have trained for months or years only to be told by the leaderboard they are not good enough to progress to the finals.

Sport at all levels can seem insanely cruel. It has always been like this and it will always be like this. There is a flip side but in the moment it is not always easy to see.
