The Habits That Keep You Going

The Three Things That Help Prevent Burnout
We all know one. The person who's carrying just as much as everyone else. Same training load, same events, same life chaos and somehow never look like they're about to snap, never react to things they shouldn't.
Burnout isn't a buzzword anymore. It's a measurable trend; most of the evidence comes from the workplace. As of late 2025, 55% of the US workforce reported currently experiencing burnout, which is a six-year high, according to Eagle Hill Consulting's survey of 1,400+ full-time employees. Gallup's tracking shows a similar direction: 67% of workers now report burnout symptoms at their current job, up from 52% in 2021. Self-reported numbers like these always deserve a pinch of salt, but the direction across the major surveys is the same one way.
Here's the concerning thing, burnout doesn't stay in its lane. The same nervous system that gets cooked by a huge training block gets cooked by a stacked inbox. You can't compartmentalise it between "sport you" and "life you." The environment you create and the processes you run either protect you or they don't, everywhere at once.
It's a reflection of society and the immediacy of it. The quick hack, this should have been done yesterday, I got my 5km PB down in a month by doing this. You know it. We consume information so fast now that it feeds burnout in every direction. So, when an athlete can't answer, "how did that session feel," it's often a sign of whole-system burnout, not just a tired body.
I've gone close to burnout myself and watched it more times than I'd like in friends and athletes who were severely cooked, and it spreads like wildfire across the rest of their life. I've noticed three things that seem to stop people from getting to that phase, and none of them involves a yoga retreat in Bali.

1. Regular resets, not just rest days
Good programming adjusts to the life someone actually has, not the ideal one. The time you give training reflects the time you actually have that week, and the objective flexes to fit, which means less "squeezing" sessions in, and sessions you look forward to instead of rushing through. When your coach asks how a session felt, you have an answer.
Rest days matter, but the bigger lever is smaller and more frequent than people think. A 2022 meta-analysis in PLOS One, pooling 22 studies and over 2,300 participants, found that short breaks under 10 minutes produce a real, statistically significant drop in fatigue and increase in vigor. Worth being honest that they found no significant boost to task performance from short breaks alone, but that's not really the point. The point is getting to the end of a day feeling good, not shit, and getting to the end of a training block feeling excited instead of resentful.
2. Perspective through reflection
The gap between "I trained hard" and "I know why I trained hard, and what it's building toward" is where burnout actually gets prevented. Reflective journaling studies including pilot work with hospital nurses — found that as little as five minutes, three times a week, was enough to shift burnout and compassion-fatigue markers. It's not about writing anymore. It's about reviewing instead of just accumulating.
When we moved our dog back from Dubai, I lost the biggest reflection points of my day, his walks. There were three: the morning one before the 5:59 session, which was always "what did I do yesterday, how was it, what am I doing today, why am I doing it?" A midday one that was just a quick scroll back through the day so far. And the evening one, walking through the day's big moments and why I felt the way I did about them. Losing that, without realising how much weight it was carrying, took me right up to the edge of fully combusting.
3. Your inner circle
This is the one the research is most consistent with. Across decades of occupational health studies, healthcare workers, social workers, teachers, police showed that social support shows up again and again as a direct, measurable buffer against burnout. Not a nice benefit but a fully-fledged protective factor with its own effect size, independent of workload.
It runs both ways. Coach someone long enough and you start reading the signs before they can name them themselves; a numbness to training that wasn't there before, a session review that comes back flat instead of specific, a performance that doesn't match the effort going in. They’re all cues that can be acted on, ifthat person trusts his inner circle and the voices within it.
A coach's job is never just the plan on the page. It's noticing when the real question underneath all of it is simpler: are you actually happy right now. That's the inner circle doing its job in both directions. In the workplace, you don't always get to pick up your team; in life, you do. Choosing who adds energy and who takes it away, and who trusts you enough to call you out when you're struggling, is one of the highest-leverage decisions you'll make.

Burnout isn't a personal failing, and it isn't inevitable either. It's what happens when none of the above are in place for long enough. The people who never seem to break aren't tougher. They've just built the resets, the reflection, and the circle before they needed them.
