How to Manage Pre-Race Anxiety

Your Nevers Aren’t the Enemy, Here’s How to Run with Them
The night before a big race, your mind is buzzing. What if I don’t hit my goal? What if I forget something? What if I just… fail? I have even had dreams that I turned up to the starting line in my jeans!
Even though it does not feel great in the moment, take solace in knowing that pre-race anxiety is completely normal; even professional runners feel it. That nervous energy is simply your body’s way of saying, “this matters”. The trick is to channel it into focus and confidence rather than letting it spiral.
So, here are some ways to manage your nerves, so you arrive at the start line ready to run your best.
1. Accept That Nerves Are Normal
Feeling anxious doesn’t mean you’re unprepared; it means you care. Instead of fighting the feelings, acknowledge them. Remind yourself: "This is just my body gearing up to perform.”
2. Control What You Can
You can’t control the weather, the crowds, or other runners, but you can control your preparation.
Lay out your race kit the night before
Pack your fuel, hydration, and safety pins
Review your race plan and course

3. Use Visualisation
Spend a few minutes imagining yourself running smoothly, handling challenges calmly, and crossing the finish line strong. Mental rehearsal helps your brain feel more prepared, which can reduce stress. This can also be done during your shake out run the day prior to racing.
4. Keep Perspective
It’s easy to turn the race into a “do-or-die” moment. Remember: this is just one day, one run. Your worth as a runner (or as a person!) isn’t defined by a single race performance.
5. Breathe
When anxiety spikes, you're breathing often becomes shallow. Try a simple technique: inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 6 counts. This slows your heart rate and signals your body to relax.
6. Stick to Your Routine
Avoid making sudden changes to your pre-race habits. Eat familiar foods, go to bed at your usual time, and warm up the same way you do before key training runs.

7. Focus on the Process, Not the Outcome
Instead of obsessing over your finishing time, focus on executing your race plan at each stage, pacing well, fuelling regularly, and staying mentally strong.
8. Use the Energy
That pre-race adrenaline can actually be a gift. When channeled well, it can help you feel sharper and more alert at the start. Use it to boost your performance, not drain it.
Pre-race anxiety is part of the marathon journey. With the right strategies, you can turn nervous energy into powerful forward momentum. When the gun goes off, you’ll be ready, not because you’ve eliminated the nerves, but because you’ve learned how to run with them.
