Why Kids Should Move Before They Compete

Teach Movement First. Competition Comes Later.

As a father, I want my daughter to grow up healthy, confident and capable. Like many parents, I want my child to enjoy sport, but more importantly, I want her to enjoy being active for the rest of her life.

Having been around youth sports and coaching hundreds of kids, I know that many children today specialise too early. They spend hours practicing one sport before they have even developed the movement skills that every child should have. Running, jumping, landing, throwing, catching, balancing and changing direction, these are not only sport skills, but they are life skills.

Here at InnerFight, the Youth Program, we believe movement literacy is the foundation of everything, before strength comes from movement. Before performance comes confidence. Before competition comes competence, that's why our youngest athletes spend their time exploring movement in a safe and fun environment before progressing into more structured training as they grow older.

This approach isn't about creating the next professional athlete. It's about giving every child the confidence to walk into any sporting environment knowing they can move well, learn new skills, and enjoy being active.

Research consistently shows that children who develop a broad range of movement skills are more likely to stay physically active throughout their lives. They suffer fewer injuries, learn new sports more easily, and enjoy exercise because they feel competent in doing it.

As a parent, that's exactly what I want for my own child. Whether they become rugby players, footballers, dancers or simply healthy adults, they'll have the physical foundation to succeed.

Here at InnerFight, the youth program does not teach one sport. We teach children foundations that allow them to succeed in sport and life.

Want to know more about the youth program or discuss your child's sporting pathway? The coffee is on me!
