Why Training Must Fit Your Life

Real life training truths
Because your fitness goals are important… but so is your actual life
It’s very easy to buy into the ‘perfect training plan.’ On paper or an app, it looks seamless and easy to follow, with a solid structure, smart progression, enough volume to look impressive on Strava and enough intensity to make you feel like a weapon.
The only issue?
Your actual life didn’t get the memo.
You’ve got work, family, kids who think 3am is party time (does it ever stop?!), meetings that run late and so on. You have weather that ignores your Tuesday Track session or long 5hr trail run and occasionally or even often for some people, a body that’s just flat out tired from trying to do it all.
Yet plenty of athletes (experienced and newbies alike) like to judge their training like they’re full-time professionals with a chef, a massage therapist, actual full rest days where all they do is rest with their feet up with nothing else to do and….
- Miss one session and panic.
- Move a workout and feel instant guilt.
- Shorten a long run and suddenly the race is apparently ruined because the training block is “off the rails” and not worth pursuing.
Let’s be honest here - the best form of training isn’t the most perfect plan or training block or even the person with the best intentions. It’s a program built for you and with you so that you can actually stick to it WITHOUT your life falling apart.
Building fitness isn’t about hitting a solid ‘hero’ week or block where everything aligns, your life doesn’t get in the way, and you train like a sponsored athlete with hoards of free time. It’s built from the normal weeks where there are messy sessions, missed power outputs, resetting and trying to hit the next session better than the last. It’s the “well that didn’t go to plan, but I still got something done” weeks that you bank time and time again - where consistency beats perfection. Every. Single. Time.
The athletes who improve long term (think: months, years, even decades) aren’t the ones forcing every session upon themselves no matter what. They’re the ones who adjust before things explode and they give up because….
- They swap the hard run for a podcast walk when sleep’s been terrible (thanks kids! Or work!)
- They shorten the session instead of binning it completely.
- They are flexible and move their training to: protect family time, balance work expectations or keep their mental health manageable rather than squeezing it all in and becoming an unbearable human to live or work with.

The crucial point here is that training should support your life, not compete with or drain it. If your plan only works when everything goes perfectly, it’s not a strong plan, it’s a weak ideal and not personalised for you. Good programming has flexibility built in which is where your coach comes into play as well as your honesty with them about how you live and function day to day. If you are open and honest you’ll get the most out of your training as your program can then allow for the tired days, busy weeks, holidays, work chaos, the actual human life that you’re living and breathing.
When training fits into your life, you keep doing it and when you keep doing it, you improve. It might not be sexy, dramatic or social media braggy but it WILL be effective.
Final Thoughts: Stop chasing that perfect training week, block or performance - it actually doesn’t exist. Think about following a program (from a coach) that you can use realistically in the midst of your slightly (or extremely) chaotic life.
Remember: To adjust your training early, to stay as consistent as possible and to keep showing up even if you’ve had a terrible run of it.
People who win at life aren’t the ones with the perfect green boxes in training peaks - they’re the ones still training when life (inevitably) gets in the way.
