What's Next After Your First CrossFit Open?

The CrossFit Open 2026: What’s Next?

There is a lot to learn from every single Open you complete. And now that the dust has settled, and you’ve taken time to recover and celebrate, there is the lingering question of what to do next.

Not only did you just complete three gruelling workouts, but there are a lot of other aspects of the Open that may have left you dazed and confused: what the Open actually is, the process from start to finish, video submissions, deadlines, rules, being judged, and those unwavering movement standards.

There’s a sharp learning curve when you throw yourself headfirst into the Open, and each year you’ll always gain more knowledge, especially through trial and error. 2026 marks my 8th Open, and it is always a humbling experience.

It all boils down to honing in on your strengths and weaknesses. If you learned any of the points below, then you should consider your first, second, or tenth Open a success.

Were you more resilient than you thought?

Did you learn about workout intensity and how to stay in the pain cave? (I’m forever learning)

During 26.1, did you hold onto the wall ball longer than you thought you could?

Did you manage to perform a movement that you thought you couldn’t do when the workout was released? Maybe going from zero pull-ups to one or ten?

Do you have a better understanding of what movements you could improve upon?

That’s all amazing. But where to from here?

Set Targets

CrossFit can feel like trying to spin 100 plates at once. So how do you master all of these components to become a well-rounded athlete?  By trying not to master everything at once. Half the fun is that there is always something to work on, so create a list of targets, and I will be more than happy to help you get after them.

Take 26.2 for example. How did you fare on the pull-ups? If you found your gymnastics breaking down more quickly than you hoped, then it is time to work on gymnastics under fatigue.

Do Accessory Work

Easy to do and just as easy not to do. But it's the accessory work where the magic happens. You know all those little exercises you do in your warm-up or finisher during class? The ones that sometimes involve bands, dumbbells, kettlebells or simply body weight? That’s accessory work. It’s the little movements that complement the bigger ones, such as squats, pressing, cleans, snatches, pull-ups, and so forth.

Do strict strength and core work:

Strict is king. If you hated the wall balls in 26.1, the chest to bar in 26.2, or thrusters in 26.3. If you keep working on the basics by showing up for strength days, I promise these movements, and all movements really, will continue to progress. Full-body tension and core stability transfer to all movements, which is why core exercises such as planks, side planks, hollow holds, and hollow arches should always be in your arsenal. Our programming is second to none, so do your part by logging your numbers and never getting stagnant.

Learn to dig deep

All three of these workouts invited you to get cozy with the pain cave. When the mind says stop, that’s when the real fun starts and where your mental capacity and resilience are crucial. Want to get better at digging deep? Do n-o-t get comfortable in your workouts. When your mind is telling you to stop, tell it to f&c$ off and keep moving and grooving. This is a sure-fire way to get stronger and more resilient. Your capacity to work will transfer to every single workout.

Sign up for other competitions

If you found yourself loving the competitive feel of the Open and don’t want to wait around until next year for the next one, then find a competition near you. There is something for everyone, and your coaches can help steer you in the right direction. And if you want to compete but don’t want to go at it alone, there are plenty of group and pair competitions available as well. Competition Corner has a comprehensive database of competitions from around the world.

Closing Thoughts

The Open brings the worldwide fitness community together while simultaneously allowing you to learn more about yourself. If you had a blast while working hard, spent time with your fitness community, and came away with a few takeaways that will make you better at life, what’s not to love?
