What Is a Deload Week?

What Is a Deload Week and Why You Need One
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is thinking progress only comes from pushing harder, lifting heavier, and grinding through more volume. Yes, hard work drives results, but it’s not the whole picture. If you’re always red lining, you’ll eventually stall, burn out, or worse get injured.
That’s why I build deload weeks into training plans. They’re not a sign of weakness; in fact, they’re one of the smartest tools you can use if you’re serious about long-term progress.
What Is a Deload Week?
A deload week is a planned reduction in training intensity and volume. You still train, but you don’t smash yourself. I’ll pull back the weights, drop the sets and reps, and keep the focus on quality of movement, mobility, and recovery.
It’s not about stopping. It’s about creating a time for your body and nervous system to adapt. It’s what allows you to keep going, it’s never about taking a step back but think about it as more like walking for a short period so you can run faster after a little break.
Why I Use Them with Clients
There’s always resistance the first time I tell someone we’re going to ease back. They want to push, not pull. I add deload weeks into my training and am vocal about that with my clients so I am setting the example. And the benefits are clear:
- Nervous System Reset
Heavy lifting doesn’t just tax your muscles but also hammers your central nervous system. If that system doesn’t get a break, performance drops, and fatigue builds.
- Joint and Tissue Health
Your joints, ligaments, and tendons don’t recover as quickly as your muscles. A deload gives them the time they need, which means fewer injuries down the line.
- Mental Recharge
Always chasing big lifts and brutal sessions can wear you down mentally and you can lose focus and motivation. A lighter week helps you come back hungrier, sharper, and reminds you why you are doing what you are doing.
- Preventing Burnout
If you’ve ever felt stuck, unmotivated, or constantly sore, chances are you needed a deload. It keeps progress moving forward rather than backwards.
- Long-Term Progress
I’m not interested in quick wins for my clients. I want sustainable performance over months and years. Deload weeks are a big part of that.
When I Program a Deload
There’s no one-size-fits-all, but here’s how I approach it:
- Every 4–8 weeks depending on the block of training
- At the end of a strength or hypertrophy cycle
- When performance stalls, recovery is poor, or motivation drops
- If the signs of overreaching (fatigue, poor sleep, constant soreness) are obvious
How It Looks in Practice
In a deload, I’ll scale things back:
- Weights: Roughly 40–70% of normal working load
- Volume: Fewer sets and reps, or fewer training days
- Session Type: Sessions that focus on technique, accessory work, and mobility
- Conditioning: Easy aerobic work or lighter intervals instead of brutal efforts
Remember you’re still training, but you’re giving your body and mind the breathing room they need to come back stronger.
The Bottom Line
Training isn’t about how much punishment you can take or how long you can spend in the bin. It’s about what you are training for, following a structure and being smart about it. Deload weeks aren’t wasted time when added in at the right time and they’re what keep you healthy, consistent, and progressing year after year.
If you’re serious about performance, stop thinking you need to go 100% every single week. Sometimes the smartest move you can make is to back off, reset, and then push forward again. That’s how I train, and that’s how I coach my clients.
