The Fear of Mileage

Do you fear mileage? Here's the truth about it...
Mileage has become one of the most powerful currencies in running. Weekly totals get shared like status symbols, posted with pride, compared, and measured as if they hold the ultimate truth about fitness. For many, the number of kilometres logged feels like the definition of progress.
But here’s the problem: chasing mileage for its own sake often misses the point.
Fear creeps in when runners believe they aren’t doing “enough.” They scroll through Strava, see someone else hitting higher numbers, and immediately question their own training. Suddenly, the plan doesn’t feel good enough, the effort doesn’t feel valid, and the obsession with mileage takes over.
The danger here is twofold. First, mileage alone doesn’t always indicate improvement. Ten more kilometres a week won’t magically make you faster, stronger, or more resilient if the rest of your training lacks purpose. Sometimes the runner with fewer miles, but better structure, recovery, and focus is the one who actually moves forward.
Second, the constant push for “more” edges runners closer to injury and burnout. They often come not from one bad decision, but from a series of small overreaches in the name of chasing numbers. The line between productive training and destructive overtraining is thinner than we like to admit.

Mileage is a tool, not a measure of worth.
The real questions should be:
- Are my runs purposeful?
- Am I balancing hard and easy?
- Am I building strength, patience, and consistency?
Those are the things that drive long-term improvement. Mileage without context is just distance. Mileage with intent is progress.
