Plyometrics and Reactivity Training for Longevity

Plyometric and reactivity training focus on developing the body’s ability to produce force quickly and efficiently, often through explosive movements like jumps, hops, bounds, and rapid changes of direction.

The actions involved in this process require muscles and tendons to rapidly absorb force and immediately release it via the stretch shortening cycle.

Plyometrics and reactivity training is generally used to improve power, coordination, movement efficiency and in rehab settings to build up tissue resilience and relearn movement patterns.

These training methods became popular in athletics especially in events requiring high levels of power like the sprint events or triple jump.

Reactivity training, in particular, emphasizes quick ground contact times, balance, and neuromuscular responsiveness, which can be trained with low-impact drills as well as higher-intensity exercises.

Outside of the sport setting, and when thinking about longevity, these physical qualities are especially valuable. As people age, power and reaction speed decline faster than strength, and this decline is closely linked to fall risk, loss of independence, and reduced quality of life.

Indeed, when we look at the impact of fall risk and the huge increase in mortality risk for those who have a fall and suffer things like a broken hip, it becomes clear the importance of mitigating this risk by training reactivity.

Plyometric and reactive exercises help maintain tendon stiffness, bone density, joint integrity, and nervous system efficiency. They also improve balance and the ability to absorb and redirect force, all of which are vital with regard to everyday tasks like catching yourself during a slip, stepping off a curb, or moving quickly in unexpected situations.
