Race Planning is Simple

I thought about this the other day at a training camp, then again during a conversation about target times.

It comes back to a belief — and a non-negotiable of mine as a coach.

When it comes to race planning — pace, fueling, nutrition — you must always rely on the evidence laid before you.

If I want to run X, have I run Y enough times to show that my Z stays within tolerable levels?

It’s simple, really.  

It comes down to doing the work, qualifying the work, and then, on race day, accepting the conditions for what they are — not what you wish they were.

We talk a lot about alignment in endurance coaching, and this is where it’s absolutely key.

“I think you can do it” vs. “I know you can do it” — there’s a lot of space in between.

So, whether you’re self-coached, “apparently” coached, or coached by a human, the question should always be:

What is the evidence to back up this pacing strategy?

Is that evidence beyond reasonable doubt?
