It’s all about ‘Why?’, by Phil Hesketh

“Why?”.... A question you probably ask yourself over and over again when you are deep in the pain cave during the middle of a workout out. I can see it on people's faces and I can hear them saying it out loud to their friends, “Why are we even doing this?”. That’s the problem right there, you constantly ask that question, but do you ever answer it? I would guess that most people don’t. They would rather ask the question and get someone else to answer it for them. The problem with that is, that without any intrinsic motivation to help push you through the hard times, you will inevitably give up when things get rough. Over the past two years I have been relentless in setting goals that I want to achieve in CrossFit, some of them have happened already and some are in the distant future. I am 100% clear on those goals all the time and I am 100% dedicated towards achieving them. So for me, when things get really hard in the middle of a workout, and everyone else around me starts to complain and stop, all I have to do is think about the ‘why?’ and things suddenly become a lot easier. If you are unsure of your ‘why?’ I have found that the best thing to do is put yourself in an extremely challenging environment with a very difficult, long workout, on your own with no music. You are left alone with only the thoughts in your head. If you can’t figure out in this time why you are doing what you are doing, then maybe you just don’t want it enough. Be relentless in the pursuit of your dreams. Be ambitious in the setting of your goals. Be clear on WHY you want to achieve them. Most importantly, Show NO Weakness!   By: InnerFight Director of Training, Phil Hesketh
