Don’t Give Up

I’ve been dealing with back pain for over a year now. It’s easy for me to trace it back because I remember vividly sitting on the plane from Switzerland to Dubai when I first visited for the Dubai Fitness Championship in December 2016. Since then, the pain in my lower back has been a constant in my daily life and I can count on one hand the days where I’ve been absolutely pain free. I’ve done a lot of stupid mistakes when it comes to dealing with that injury (I’m not going to give too many details here, feel free to ask me when you see me in the gym if you’re interested). However, here is the single best piece of advice I can give: DON’T STOP MOVING I am not talking about doing heavy deadlifts with a painful back, but rather finding out what movements you can do pain-free or what range of motion doesn’t hurt. For example, I know that picking up weights from the ground is not good for me, but lifting from the hang is fine. The best way for the body to get better is to stay active. Additionally, and everyone who’s been injured can attest this: injury sucks. But staying isolated, away from the gym while binge eating on ice cream won’t make you feel better and won’t help you make progress on other things you could be working on. If you don’t know where to start, ask for help. Get a coach, schedule your PT sessions and get after it. Because no problem will solve itself, it is your responsibility to do something about it.
