In articles one & two, I covered the reasons why your child should get involved in team sports & swimming. In part three, I will share some of my reasons why your child should learn a combat sport as a part of my FOUR MUST DO ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR KIDS.
Combat Sports, like team sports and swimming promotes physical activity which is the main thing for children. Combat sports come in many different forms, however, they all provide many challenges, breakthroughs and setbacks without the distractions or gimmicks that you usually see in other sports, clubs, centres and even your house, thus allowing your child to find focus and stillness.
Builds confidence – Every time your child learns and masters a new skill you will be able to see an increase in their overall confidence. The right providers in combat sports will teach your child that there are no tough guys. Every participant ultimately learns this sense of respect and true confidence.
Learn self defence – Having the ability to defend yourself if you are ever placed in a dangerous situation can be an empowering feeling. Most disciplines focus on peaceful conflict resolution, they also give children valuable tools to defend themselves should they ever need to.
Teaches self discipline – Nowadays, people are receiving and seeking instant gratification. Having something to strive for like a new ranking or mastering a new skill, means kids are much more likely to understand what is needed and to dedicate the time and energy needed to achieve that goal.
Instills a sense of respect – One thing is evident (especially in martial art movies) which is the students respect and willingness to listen and learn. The only way to thrive and grow in any of these disciplines is to listen and learn from those that are more experienced than you are.
Learn to take hits – Whether that hit is a literal blow or a disappointment like failing a test; part of life is learning that we all take hits. The key is in learning how best to take a hit and get back up but with a current culture of ‘every kid gets a trophy/medal’ this seems to be lost. In combat sports your kid will learnt to fail a lot as half of combat sports is hitting but half is also getting hit.
Not only a great way to get your kids active, but to also be a part of something. Within these sports your child will learn what it is to be still, challenged and focused.
